KAWS (b. 1974) is an American artist and designer known for his graffiti roots and resulting toys and paintings. Born Brain Donnelly in Jersey City, NJ, KAWS began his career in animation after graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York. After his reworking of advertisements in New York began attracting attention from the street art scene in the early 1990s, KAWS accumulated more and more critical and pop culture accreditation.

Today, KAWS is not only internationally successful as a street artist but also a painter and sculptor (both in large scale, monumental works as well as smaller works referred to as toys). Furthermore, his collaborations with Uniqlo and Nike, as well as his purposeful release of artwork at several price points blur the lines between commercial and fine art as he gains traction with both traditional art collectors and cultural fashion influencers. KAWS’s work can be found, among many other locations, in the collections at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Rosenblum Collection in Paris. The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
