Ernesto Burgos was born in Santa Clara, California, and raised in Chile. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the College of the Arts in San Francisco, California in 2004, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from New York University in 2008. Ernesto Burgo’s large sculptural forms are evocative of 1950’s Abstract Expressionist trends. Burgos transforms ordinary materials such as cardboard, fiberglass, and resin through an intense process of manipulation. Guided partially by intuition, and partially by the personalities of the materials themselves, he bends, tears, cuts, and glues repeatedly until the shape arrives at its final form. He is interested in objects that have gone through a process of change, shifting, and manipulation – with the process still being evident in the piece’s final state. Burgos’ work has been exhibited across the U.S. and internationally, most notably in solo exhibitions at Kate Werble Gallery (New York) and The Goma (Madrid), and is part of the public collection of Kunstmuseum Magdeburg in Magdeburg, Germany. Burgos currently lives and works in New York, NY.
