Opening Reception: Saturday, March 8, 6pm–8pm
Here and Now continues TIDE’s exploration of his signature cat character, which the artist depicts in monochromatic, often domestic settings. Throughout these works, the cat character is seen reclined and pensive, tucked in bundles of fabric or isolated in portraits on stark black and white backgrounds. Primarily using acrylic paint in the past, the artist has incorporated new materials into these paintings such as pastels, ink, and graphite, that bring new color and depth to his subjects. TIDE’s multi-layered compositions are created intuitively, resulting in works that mirror his emotions and state of mind at the time of their creation. His works often juxtapose states of solitude and comfort with those of uneasiness and chaos. In works such as LIFE IS FLAT 1208 (2024) and LIFE IS FLAT 1221 (2024), TIDE introduces floral themes to explore ideas of loss and decay. TIDE's "爪" (claw) series offers an intimate glimpse into the artist's daily ritual of collecting and painting his cats' shed claws. These five watercolor works (numbered 107-111) capture the essence of these anatomical fragments imparting an almost fossil-like quality to them. The shift from acrylics to watercolor for this specific series enhances the sense of movement, utilizing watercolor's unique properties - its transparency, its ability to create soft edges and gradations - for a more fluid, spontaneous application that brings dynamism to what could otherwise be static subjects. First exhibited as a collection of 100 framed watercolors at HENKYO gallery in Japan (December 2023) this marks the first time the artists "爪" (claw) series is exhibited outside of Japan.
“I don’t like to say that the past was good or to worry about the future. The present is the accumulation of the past, and the future is the accumulation of the present. Painting is also the accumulation of the present and I never know what will happen. These works are the result of a series of such moments.” —TIDE
