Born in 1988, Marcela Flórido is a figurative painter whose work depicts female bodies in imaginary landscapes. "The figures in my paintings, although fictional characters, have always been females: which I suppose are a hybrid of myself and other women in my life. My goal is to give them agency as I obsessively repaint them again and again. I am not necessarily after a female aesthetic but developing a vocabulary that feels closer to my own intimacy and body. Similarly, the landscapes I depict do not correspond to real space or time. Instead, I understand them as fabricated memories of all the places I've called home over the past ten years. Having lived in such contrasting cities as Rio de Janeiro, London, and New York, my body had to adapt, growing amidst each place's new realities."
